SDG 12: responsible consumption and production

Responsible business practice starts at the source. Ambius focuses on conscious decision-making throughout the entire lifecycle of interior planting: from cultivation and procurement to maintenance, reuse, and processing.

The plants we install are cultivated by specialized nurseries such as Nieuwkoop Europe BV in De Kwakel. Every plant is provided with an official plant passport—a statutory requirement for the phytosanitary clearance and trade of cuttings, seeds, and young plants within the European Union. This passport ensures origin traceability and phytosanitary status, enhancing transparency and supply chain reliability.

Exotic species are shipped by Nieuwkoop as young cuttings, which occupy significantly less cargo volume than fully grown plants. This enables higher transport efficiency and lower emissions per plant. On-site, these cuttings are subsequently cultivated into mature indoor plants.

The cultivation, ongoing care, and transition of soil-rooted plants to hydroponics are supported by rainwater harvested, filtered, and stored by Nieuwkoop in underground storage basins. Featuring an 11,000 m3 capacity, this closed-loop system directly supports water conservation. Additionally, over 1,085 solar panels installed on the nursery's roof cover a substantial portion of daily electricity demands with locally generated power.

Ambius also cultivates plants within a controlled environment in our Greenhouse in Duiven. Water supplied to the foliage is collected in dedicated storage tanks, filtered, and recirculated within our closed-loop cultivation system. Returned plants that remain suitable for re-use are restored through balanced nourishment and professional pruning; remaining organic matter is processed into biomass for composting or energy generation raw materials.

To further advance circular principles, Ambius offers a specialized collection of circular green furniture. This range includes vases, planters, and pedestals designed for complete recyclability. Existing planters are systematically reused, refurbished, or refinished. Processing retired containers into raw granulate creates the foundation for new products. Furthermore, Ambius utilizes Cemani wood—the soft layer beneath teak bark that would otherwise remain unutilized. We repurpose this byproduct into structural elements across our collection.

We absorb the manufacturing costs of these circular initiatives, enabling clients to choose responsibly sourced materials without additional financial barriers. In doing so, we demonstrate that raw material preservation and business development operate in harmony, fully aligned with UN SDG 12: responsible consumption and production.
