SDG 12: responsible consumption and production

At Ambius, we believe sustainability starts at the source. We ensure sustainability throughout the entire lifecycle of our plants—from cultivation and purchase to maintenance, recycling, and composting.

The plants we provide are sustainably grown by Nieuwkoop Europe BV, a reputable nursery in De Kwakel. Each plant comes with a plant passport, an official document required for phytosanitary clearance and the trade of cuttings, seeds, young plants, and trees within the European Union. This passport guarantees plant health and traceability, supporting the transparency and reliability Nieuwkoop upholds.

Exotic plants are shipped as cuttings by Nieuwkoop, which take up less space than mature plants. This method enables more efficient transport and reduces CO₂ emissions. These cuttings are then grown into mature plants on-site.

The cultivation process, careful care, and transition of rootstock plants to hydroponic systems are fully supported by rainwater collected, purified, filtered, and stored in underground basins by Nieuwkoop. With a capacity of 11,000 m³, this system contributes significantly to water conservation and sustainability. Additionally, more than 1,085 solar panels installed on the nursery’s roof generate 328,000 kWh annually—covering 55% of their total electricity consumption. Within two years, this number will increase to 1,200 panels, further boosting Nieuwkoop’s sustainable energy production.

At Ambius, we also grow plants in a climate-controlled environment at our Greenhouse in Duiven. All water used for planting is collected in basins, filtered, and reused, ensuring no water is wasted. Returned plants that remain visually appealing are revitalized with nutrients and expert pruning, while plants no longer suitable are processed under strict guidelines into biomass, which is then used as compost or fuel.

To reinforce our commitment to sustainability, Ambius offers a circular collection of green furniture, including vases, planters, bowls, and columns—all fully recyclable. Our old planters are recycled, refurbished, or repainted, and ground-down planter material is used as granulate to create new planters. We also use Cemanihout, the soft wood beneath the bark of teak trees, which is usually discarded because it is unsuitable for furniture. We transform this "waste product" into sustainable eye-catching pieces in our collection.

We cover the production costs of these circular and eco-friendly initiatives so that customers can enjoy sustainability without additional financial burden. This demonstrates that sustainability and economic growth go hand in hand, fully aligned with SDG 12: responsible consumption and production.

At Ambius, we strongly focus on waste prevention and recycling. We have set ambitious goals to reduce our residual waste by 20% by 2025 compared to 2019 and to drastically cut plastic use. Our ultimate aim is to fully recycle all waste by 2025. These efforts are crucial in advancing sustainable practices and preserving natural resources for a healthier planet and future generations.
