Royal Den Hartogh is a leading logistics service provider with a rich family heritage. The company recently relocated to a fully renovated building; a former warehouse transformed into a sustainable and modern office. One question guided the redesign: how can the identity of a strong, international family business be translated into an inspiring and green workplace?
Green as a Unifying Element
Royal Den Hartogh wanted an office that emphasised the building’s rugged character while also radiating warmth and vitality. At the heart of the design was the desire for a striking focal point: a large tree in the courtyard symbolising growth and connection. The company also requested robust, industrial-style planters with a concrete finish, in keeping with the building’s architectural character.
The space initially offered a blank canvas - entirely empty - on which we collaborated with the client to develop a green concept.
From Tender to Completion
Ambius participated in the tender with a plan that reflected Royal Den Hartogh’s values as a family-owned business. Discussions focused on sustainability, functionality and experience. Together with the client, we explored the right balance between design and feasibility, resulting in a planting plan that is both aesthetically appealing and highly practical.
The planting scheme features a playful mix of species, carefully selected to create variety and dynamism throughout the space. Plants were placed in existing furniture planters and the sturdy concrete-look planters, harmonising perfectly with the building’s architecture.
The Result
Royal Den Hartogh’s new office feels warm, open and contemporary - a workspace designed for 2025. The courtyard with its iconic tree forms the building’s green heart, serving as an eye-catching hub where staff and visitors enjoy gathering. The combination of robust materials and vibrant greenery creates a pleasant, calming workplace that reflects the identity of the family business.
Research by Ambius and the University of Technology Sydney shows that plants effectively help remove petrol fumes and other harmful pollutants from indoor air.
In collaboration with the University of Groningen, Ambius discovered that plants at work increases satisfaction, improves concentration, and boosts productivity by up to 15%.
Research by Wageningen Environmental Research shows that plants enhance workplace well-being, increase humidity levels, and help reduce absenteeism.
Respect for people and the environment is deeply embedded in our company’s DNA and reflected in all our processes.
