What Impact Do Plants Have on Workplace Productivity?
Last Updated: 23 June 2026
Plants in the working environment increase employee productivity by 15% to 19%. In addition, they boost satisfaction and concentration, without negatively affecting the quality of the work delivered. This is shown by scientific research conducted by Ambius and the University of Groningen (UG).
Scientific Research Into Plants in the Working Environment
To map out the exact effects of greenery in the workplace, Ambius carried out an in-depth study in collaboration with the University of Groningen (UG) and PRISM. This research focused specifically on how live greenery influences employee performance and well-being.
The Setup of the Study
The researchers chose a two-pronged approach at large, active organisations:
- Research locations: Data was collected simultaneously at a Dutch health insurer and an accountancy firm in London.
- Timeframe: To measure both immediate and lasting effects, the study ran over periods of three weeks and three months.
- Comparison method: Teams initially worked in an office layout without any plants, after which the same spaces were enriched with greenery to measure the difference.
Because the first two studies did not show immediate, objective figures regarding labour productivity, an additional practical experiment was set up. During this experiment, employees carried out concrete tasks within their own, familiar working environment. This experiment revealed that productivity in the rooms with houseplants was 15% and 19% higher respectively.
The Benefits of a Green Working Environment
"We notice that the layout of an office has a direct impact on focus and tranquillity within a team. An office design with strategically placed greenery changes the dynamics on the shop floor in a positive way."
Adding office landscaping with live greenery offers several concrete benefits for your organisation:
- Higher concentration: Employees can maintain their focus for longer.
- Increase in employee satisfaction: People feel more comfortable and at home in their workplace faster.
- Better air quality: Employees perceive the air in the room as fresher and more pleasant.
The Influence of Plants on Health and Well-Being
In addition to boosting productivity, a green working environment makes a significant contribution to the health of your team. The data from the study with the University of Groningen shows that greenery effectively reduces physical and mental complaints.
Fewer Complaints and Lower Absenteeism
Employees working in a green environment suffer demonstrably less from:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Stress
This effect occurs because plants improve humidity levels and reduce the amount of dust particles in the air. This supports breathing, resulting in employees who feel healthier and more relaxed. The direct logical consequence of this is a decrease in sickness absenteeism and an increase in overall job satisfaction.
