The municipality of Gooise Meren, located in the heart of the Gooi region, includes the towns of Bussum, Naarden, Muiden, and Muiderberg. Known for its green character, historic charm, and focus on quality of life, the municipality aims to reflect these values in its physical spaces, emphasising hospitality and engagement.
Creating Atmosphere with Greenery
Upon entering the town hall, it was noticeable that the waiting area, while functional, felt cold and distant. This did not align with the municipality’s welcoming character. The objective was clear: create a warm, calming, and green environment where visitors immediately feel at ease.
From Concept to Realisation
In collaboration with the municipality, we explored how natural elements could transform the entrance. A custom-built planter was installed across the full width of the reception desk, filled with a carefully selected mix of plants varying in height, texture, and shades of green. The result is an ‘urban jungle’ that brings life to the space while maintaining a sense of calm.
The Result
The waiting area now feels noticeably more inviting and friendly. The plants provide a tranquil, natural atmosphere that puts both visitors and staff at ease. The entrance offers a warm welcome that reflects the municipality of Gooise Meren’s commitment to hospitality and care.
Research by Ambius and the University of Technology Sydney shows that plants effectively help remove petrol fumes and other harmful pollutants from indoor air.
In collaboration with the University of Groningen, Ambius discovered that plants at work increases satisfaction, improves concentration, and boosts productivity by up to 15%.
Research by Wageningen Environmental Research shows that plants enhance workplace well-being, increase humidity levels, and help reduce absenteeism.
