An atrium excels in light and space, but due to the abundance of glass and concrete, it can sometimes feel cold. Greenery is the perfect antidote here. By cleverly utilising the height of the space with indoor trees and large planters, we break up the immense feeling of the room, instantly giving the central hall an accessible, comfortable atmosphere.
Balance between space and greenery
A large atrium requires a well-thought-out green plan that centres around height. The foundation of a successful design lies in the perfect balance between sleek interior materials and natural layering.
Element 1: Large planters
The planters form the solid foundation of the entire design. By opting for large design planters grouped in a fixed arrangement of varying sizes, we introduce natural layering to the space without making it feel cluttered.
- Organic zoning: The fluid, natural shapes of the planters act as friendly barriers. They cleverly divide an open-plan layout into clear zones and direct foot traffic in an effortless manner.
- Sleek materials: Featuring materials like robust concrete-look or powder-coated steel, the planters blend perfectly with the modern architecture and open character of the space.
- Optimal condition: Since plants in an atrium catch a lot of sunlight, these planters offer a generous water buffer. This protects the planting from drying out long-term and ensures a consistently prestigious appearance.
Element 2: Large-leaved eye-catchers
With strategically placed large, tall specimen plants, we elegantly draw the greenery upwards and connect the different floors. These eye-catchers beautifully fill the high space and instantly create a welcoming, natural atmosphere.
- Characteristic large plants: The deployment of large, large-leaved plants, such as the striking Ficus Lyrata and the tropical Strelitzia, guarantees a 'wow effect' upon arrival.
- Airy volume: The enormous leaves instantly provide a lush green filling. Thanks to the bare trunks and the slender, open structure of the plants, they remain easy to see through, keeping the view at eye level completely transparent.

Element 4: Artificial green wall
An impressive vertical green wall breaks up the rigid lines of glass and concrete. It delivers a powerful dose of nature to walls where living greenery is impossible due to a lack of daylight or water connections.
- Natural and colour-fast appearance: The UV-resistant wall by Vistafolia is almost indistinguishable from real plants and offers a rich variety of leaf shapes that will not fade in direct sunlight.
- Acoustic peace: Beyond the visual transformation, the layered structure of the artificial walls subtly helps to break up harsh echoes in the large, open space.

When the concrete slab is already poured or a multi-storey car park sits directly beneath, excavating for a mature tree is simply not an option. This makes constructing deep subterranean planting pits impossible.
We solve this using custom-built, large-format planters seamlessly integrated into your interior architecture. By cladding these planters in materials matching your flooring, or merging them with integrated lounge seating, the trees appear to emerge naturally from the floor.
Mature trees, substantial architectural planters and hundreds of litres of water quickly amount to significant weight. Not every upper floor or floating atrium structure is engineered for such heavy, concentrated point loads.
To protect your floor structure, we utilize lightweight, engineered substrates instead of heavy soil. Furthermore, during the design phase, we coordinate placement with structural engineers to position planters strategically above load-bearing columns and walls.
Expansive glazed facades create intense heat gain in summer, while winter often brings cold draughts near entrances or ventilation units. Many tropical species struggle with these sharp temperature swings.
We address this by exclusively selecting acclimatized plant species naturally resilient to changing conditions. Additionally, we advise on optimal distances from glass facades and install them using hydroculture systems. This proven approach (supported by a clear water gauge) ensures plants receive the precise amount of moisture required, even during warmer periods.
Hanging installations six metres overhead or trees reaching the first floor create exceptional visual impact, but routine pruning, inspection or cleaning present clear logistical challenges.
To prevent the need for continuous scaffolding in your main reception hall, we establish a streamlined maintenance plan during the design stage. For the most inaccessible locations, we recommend maintenance-free, premium silk foliage. For living greenery, maintenance schedules are engineered for straightforward, safe access by our specialist teams.
