Modern Atrium

An atrium excels in light and space, but due to the abundance of glass and concrete, it can sometimes feel cold. Greenery is the perfect antidote here. By cleverly utilising the height of the space with indoor trees and large planters, we break up the immense feeling of the room, instantly giving the central hall an accessible, comfortable atmosphere.

Abundant natural light

The immense amount of daylight forms the perfect foundation for vital plants that shift beautifully with the seasons.

Focus on height

We make full use of the building’s height by introducing large trees as natural, breathtaking focal points.

Central gathering

The atrium becomes the living heart of the office, where greenery creates areas of tranquility without obstructing views.

Balance between space and greenery

A large atrium requires a well-thought-out green plan that centres around height. The foundation of a successful design lies in the perfect balance between sleek interior materials and natural layering.

Element 1: Large planters

The planters form the solid foundation of the entire design. By opting for large design planters grouped in a fixed arrangement of varying sizes, we introduce natural layering to the space without making it feel cluttered.

  • Organic zoning: The fluid, natural shapes of the planters act as friendly barriers. They cleverly divide an open-plan layout into clear zones and direct foot traffic in an effortless manner.
  • Sleek materials: Featuring materials like robust concrete-look or powder-coated steel, the planters blend perfectly with the modern architecture and open character of the space.
  • Optimal condition: Since plants in an atrium catch a lot of sunlight, these planters offer a generous water buffer. This protects the planting from drying out long-term and ensures a consistently prestigious appearance.

Element 2: Large-leaved eye-catchers

With strategically placed large, tall specimen plants, we elegantly draw the greenery upwards and connect the different floors. These eye-catchers beautifully fill the high space and instantly create a welcoming, natural atmosphere.

  • Characteristic large plants: The deployment of large, large-leaved plants, such as the striking Ficus Lyrata and the tropical Strelitzia, guarantees a 'wow effect' upon arrival.
  • Airy volume: The enormous leaves instantly provide a lush green filling. Thanks to the bare trunks and the slender, open structure of the plants, they remain easy to see through, keeping the view at eye level completely transparent.
  • Healthy climate: The large leaf volume of the plants naturally filters the air, ensuring a pleasant, fresh, and healthy indoor climate.

Element 3: Silk ceiling hangers

To make the overwhelming height of an atrium truly warm and inviting, we actively involve the ceiling in the design with floating, green installations.

  • Three-dimensional effect: The generous round hangers featuring premium silk greenery by Emerald break up the emptiness and naturally draw visitors' eyes upwards. The detailed, high-quality finish makes this greenery virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
  • Visual connection: By suspending the greenery at various heights, a dynamic connection is created with the plants and planters on the ground floor.
  • Sustainable and maintenance-free: These premium silk plants require no care and always retain their natural look, even in the most inaccessible places.

Element 4: Artificial green wall

An impressive vertical green wall breaks up the rigid lines of glass and concrete. It delivers a powerful dose of nature to walls where living greenery is impossible due to a lack of daylight or water connections.

  • Natural and colour-fast appearance: The UV-resistant wall by Vistafolia is almost indistinguishable from real plants and offers a rich variety of leaf shapes that will not fade in direct sunlight.
  • Acoustic peace: Beyond the visual transformation, the layered structure of the artificial walls subtly helps to break up harsh echoes in the large, open space.
  • Certified fire safety: The panels are fully fire-retardant tested and certified according to the strictest international ISO standards.

Element 5: Moss sculptures

A moss sculpture transforms a bare wall into a unique piece of natural art. It is the perfect way to merge nature, design, and brand identity within a space.

  • Crafted in our own studio: Each sculpture is fully bespoke and handmade in our dedicated moss studio in Duiven. This guarantees high-end craftsmanship and an eye for the smallest detail.
  • Acoustic design: We combine various types of premium moss with natural wood elements. This interplay of layered structures creates a tangible depth effect and effectively absorbs distracting ambient noise in the atrium.
  • Endlessly customisable: Because every project is unique, we provide tailored solutions in their purest form. From free-flowing organic lines to sleek corporate logos, virtually any design and colour scheme can be realised.

FAQs about biophilic design

It is a design strategy that restores the natural connection between people and their working environment. Rather than simply placing loose pots in corners, we seamlessly integrate living walls, daylight, and natural materials into the architecture. This is proven to reduce stress and enhance workplace focus.

Biophilic design significantly lowers stress levels, reduces mental fatigue, and boosts productivity. Because the human brain is biologically programmed to respond positively to natural elements, organic textures, and plants, employees recover faster from stressful tasks and feel more comfortable.

Large leaf surface areas and lush planting absorb ambient noise and break up sound waves in open-plan spaces. Modern offices with hard materials like glass and concrete often suffer from distracting echoes. Strategically placed greenery noticeably reduces this reverberation time, creating a quieter indoor climate.

In our Experience Centre, you can feel the physical impact of large-scale interior landscaping on acoustics, human scale, and air quality. Instead of choosing from a catalogue, you can experience our three complete concepts (Botanical Loft, Modern Atrium, and Urban Jungle Space) at full scale.
